A Taste of Christmas

November 30th, 2009

If you’ve already visited the Manchester Christmas Market, you will probably had a tipple or two of the delicious gluhwein or mulled wine that is served on the various Christmas market stalls.  To recreate the festive favourite at home, try out our mulled wine Christmas recipe.manchester-christmas-market_gallery

Gluhwein is traditionally made from red wine and spices and served warm.  Historically, wine often went bad so by adding spices and honey it could be made more palatable. In more recent times, it has become a traditional winter warmer served at the festive season and a popular feature a Christmas markets.

Christmas Mulled Wine Recipe

1 litre red wine (this can be inexpensive wine)

75g sugar (to taste- depending on the wine used)

6 whole cloves

1-2 cinnamon sticks

Pinch of allspice

1 large orange

1 lemon

100ml brandy

Method

Gently heat the wine in a large saucepan.  Add the sugar and spices, lemon and orange zest and juice.  Allow to steep over a gentle heat for 30 minutes.  Do not allow the mixture to boil.Gluhwein

Finally add the brandy and heat for a further 5 minutes.

Strain before serving and garnish with a slice of orange.

Note

Brandy can be substituted for rum or port or for a more intense orange flavour use triple sec or Cointreau instead.
